Riya 1.0 on the Mac
Today we are announcing the release of our Mac uploader for Riya. I know many of you have wanted to use Riya 1.0 (which lets you search your own photos as opposed to Riya 2.0 - which is a web wide Visual search engine) but couldn't because we were lame and didn't have a Mac version..;-(. Now you have it.
In fact the Intel-Macs came out just in time. Because Riya uses so much CPU horsepower, it runs very slowly on the non-intel macs (G4 or G5) but now with the new Macs it is as fast as a PC. Try it out. We have iPhoto import as well (see the bottom of the 2nd page) but I have heard that is is not working perfectly for all.
Some screen shots below:
Settings Page (Not the iPhoto import - other imports will be coming)
Uploading page - showing the detection step which is why our uploader takes longer than others.
How do you try it? Goto www.riya.com and sign up. Then click add photos and download and if will sense you are on a Mac and give you the client. We've even made it a Universal Binary for the new Intel Macs.
Feedback always welcome (even if you complain about UI...;-)
Great work to Tanvir, Nitin, and Vineet for developing this. They really did a great job on this. In fact they rewrote our PC uploader completely into Java to make it more stable. Great work guys.

Munjal,
Why does one have to use a uploader ? Can't I just use the browser to upload. Haven't used Riya since it needs a client.

The Riya uploader does the face recognition as well.
It's Riya's way of offloading both the huge bandwidth required for full-res images (Riya only stores thumbnails) and the CPU requirement for processing the vectors involved in face recognition.

When I try to get an account all I get is a grayed out screen and am unable to input any information.

This is great news, thanks for that. I had been waiting for it for weeks. Here are the initial comments :
- When you are proposed to select the source of the picture, There is flickr (Great !) but it is greyed out ( :-( )
S, is it just my mistake, or is it just not yet implemented ?
- When selecting iPhoto, my iPhotos album are not listed.
- How to propose a link back to where the full resolution version of the image is stored ?
- Still the usual US centric view of the world ... How can I say that a picture was taken in Australia ?

I have been waiting for soo long for the Mac uploader. Now that it's here I am more impressed with Riya than I could imagine. Amazing technology.
I think the issue with people having trouble with iPhoto uploads might happen when their iPhoto library (on the file system) is not named "iPhoto Library". I renamed my folder name from iPhoto Library El Sal to iPhoto Library and the uploading is working great now.
Thank You!

Hey Munjal - I just wrote an extended post on why I think this is a fantastic new development for our clients (in the media and entertainment industry.) For some reason the trackback isn't showing up in your blog, so I wanted to let you know about it:

Would love to interview you for our upcoming podcast series on digital photography!

Is Flickr import coming anytime soon? I have lots of pictures on Flickr but don't want to upload all of them to Riya again.

I have a brand new intel macbook 2.0ghz with 2gb of ram. I have now tried 4 times to upload some photos. Each time I wait for 30mins to upload 2 photos and it gets as far as detecting the faces but doesnt get any further and doesnt upload. Since I cant upload from the site either and refuse to use windows Riya is useless.
Over 30mins for 2 pictures? This cant be right.
